Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaking. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos which include commentary on the representations of women that are prevalent in contemporary culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in the popular media. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes that are associated with females in popular culture, she works to highlight issues related to harassment targeted at women and other marginalized classes of the Internet world. Sarkeesian has a degree in the fields of social thought and political science at York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian delivered speeches to the TEDxWomen Festival as well as to the United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age she was intrigued by issues of gender identity and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency website. Someone who hoped to start a web-series examining the gender representation of video games, she was targeted by an internet-based campaign. This attack was not enough to halt her. In fact, it made her more committed as a feminist and media critic. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feminism, she is the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award award-winning media journalist. She also serves as the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organization that explores pop culture depictions of women.
